American Friends of Kenya (AFK) began as an informal effort to support a Kenyan couple  living in Connecticut who wanted to help build school and community libraries in Kenya .  Many of their friends and neighbors came together to make their dream a reality

During the Summer of 2004, 18 of the people involved in the book collection drive visited Kenya.  They returned home energized and inspired to do more.  The result was the incorporation of American Friends of Kenya during October 2004 and its approval as a non-profit 501 c 3 public charity during March 2005.

Today, we send regular shipments of books, school supplies and medical supplies to schools, libraries, hospitals, clinics and orphanages. We have even started sending solar water purifiers.

We started an "Orphan Support Program"; helped build a small business project (SWEP) for the widows living with AIDS in Kibera slums, and raised funds to build the first Thika Regional Library that will serve over 900,000 people.

We have great partnerships with reputable organizations and individuals in Kenya, USA and worldwide to work towards our common goals.

We now have two chapters, Connecticut and Chicago, and hundreds of volunteers from all over the world, including Kenya.

AFK is a 100% volunteer organization.  None of its officers, directors or supporters is paid a dime, nor do we use professional fundraising services.

AFK is truly a grassroots effort and a labor of love and compassion.
